Breastfeeding a baby in the NICU? Need help from someone who has successfully nursed a preemie!?

21 Jul

I have my heart set on breastfeeding – I have bought my nursing pads, support pillows, nursing covers (hooter hider – baby au lait), books from la leche league, talked to lactation consultants, etc. and now I’m having to prepare for the fact that my baby may be born 3 months premature. I know you can nurse in the NICU, but will they let you nurse a baby born that early? Will a baby that early even know how to nurse or have the sucking reflex yet? I heard babies get the sucking reflex after 36 weeks usually. If you have a preemie & pump until your baby makes it to when his/her due date would have been, is it possible to get them to nurse after months of feeding tubes and/or bottles?

I haven’t had the baby yet, I’m on bedrest, but I’d like to be prepared so I’ll have my facts together & know what to tell the NICU nurses if I do indeed go into labor within next 2 weeks like they’re preparing me for.

help!!! bottle feeding and gagging…?

23 Feb

i have a 1 week ancient that i’m feeding from the bottle and he seems to suck way too quick (avent baby bottles) and seems to gag after he feeds, even though we’ve burped him. i’m finding now that he sometimes gags WHILE feeding as well. it’s gotten to the point where i can’t let him sleep by himself (cause i reckon he’s gonna choke), by that, i mean, either myself or my husband is up with him consistently…we’ll only sleep when we know he’s been sleeping for a excellent 30-60 mins. and only if we can see him from where we’re lying. it’s gotten to the point where i make a bed out of my nursing pillow for him so that he’s not absolutely vertical. am i being way too paranoid? any suggestions cause i am absolutely sleep deprived right now and can use all the help i can get. thanks!!!

Breastfeeding help needed!!?

14 Jan

Last year, I had my daughter, and I tried to breastfeed. I had so many problems and went to see 2 lactation consultants. In the offices, I could breastfeed like magic. The minute I got home, the pain became so absolutely unbareable. Well, I gave up. Now I want to try again with this baby. My son is now 4 days ancient, & I’m sore as EVER. At the hospital, I breastfed him and even though I was in a lot of pain, I managed. The night I got home and went to feed him, it hurt so much I HAD to take him off because the pain had me in tears. I’m wondering if it’s the place I’m sitting or the pillows I’m using that could be making a difference. I desperately want to breastfeed though b/c it’s healthier. The consultants say my positioning is fine and the baby is having no problems latching. Have any moms had this problem and found a solution? Any tips that I can do at home to make this simpler? Does a nursing pillow or nursing chair make a difference? I don’t want to give up this time.

Any nursing mom’s who’s baby’s don’t nap that well like to help me out with my little issue?

03 Jan

HI,
I want to get some thoughts on how to wean my girl from breast feeding previous to naps. She is a light napper, so whenever I even place her down (off the boppy pillow and off my breast) she wakes up within 45 mins and won’t go back to sleep unless I place her back on!

She sleeps fantastic at night. I don’t even have to nurse her previous to bed, she just falls asleep and sleeps thru most nights. I can easily comfort her back to sleep at night, but not on naps. We’ve weaned from every feeding, except nap time.

super moms/dads…need help with toddler pillow advice?!?

08 Dec

okay, here’s what I know. toddlers are supposed to get a pillow if they want one after age 2. Many people give them earlier but most advise giving them one after they change to a toddler bed.

now, here’s what I know about my son… he’s the worlds worst sleeper. he’s nearly 15 months ancient. and I place him to bed tonight (nursing, like usual) and he rolled over, crying, climbed his small buns onto a pillow with everything from the abdomen up on the pillow (on his tummy as advised by his doctor) and proceeded to fall asleep that way (he NEVER falls asleep lacking nursing unless he’s in the car). now, my question to you all (my mother is, I’m sure, asleep and I usually go to her for advice) is this… Is it a horrible thought to let him sleep that way in his crib? the pillow he fell asleep on is very very flat and it’s pretty lightweight. what do you reckon? I’m up in the air about it! He will wake up in a bit (he always wakes nearly exactly one hour after he initially falls asleep) should I try him on the pillow?
