Breastfeeding a baby in the NICU? Need help from someone who has successfully nursed a preemie!?

21 Jul

I have my heart set on breastfeeding – I have bought my nursing pads, support pillows, nursing covers (hooter hider – baby au lait), books from la leche league, talked to lactation consultants, etc. and now I’m having to prepare for the fact that my baby may be born 3 months premature. I know you can nurse in the NICU, but will they let you nurse a baby born that early? Will a baby that early even know how to nurse or have the sucking reflex yet? I heard babies get the sucking reflex after 36 weeks usually. If you have a preemie & pump until your baby makes it to when his/her due date would have been, is it possible to get them to nurse after months of feeding tubes and/or bottles?

I haven’t had the baby yet, I’m on bedrest, but I’d like to be prepared so I’ll have my facts together & know what to tell the NICU nurses if I do indeed go into labor within next 2 weeks like they’re preparing me for.

Positiong [Nursing Question]?

19 Jul

I am going to take my CNA State Exam test. Can anyone help clarify positioning in a detailed system or instructions of what to do, where to place the pillows, etc.

When taking my CNA class, I never got to practice this skill because there wasnt sufficient time [too many kids in the class i gues] :(
Sorry I meant positioning not positiong lol.

How do I check myself in a convalescent home? My doctor won’t approve the stay?

17 Jul

I recently visited a convalescent home and was shocked to see how nice it is. I could not believe the services provided, the fun events taking place among the patients and the meals. Pillows fluffed, water fetched, slippers place on your feet – all by the nurses at the push of a button.

This seems like just the thing I need. I plot to pay out of pocket & stay at least 2 months. I went to my doctor for the appropriate arrangements and at 1st he did not be with you what I was asking. Once he understood, he became mad and stated something along the line of “I will not associated with sending a 32 year ancient man to a convalescent home”. So he is certainly not going to help me.

Breastfeeding basics?

15 Jul

I am going to breastfeed for the first time–this is my second pregnancy, and for medical reasons, I could not breastfeed my first baby. I didn’t get a lot of support from my family as well, so I didn’t know I could just pump and dump…but that’s beside the point. I really want to try this time around!

Anyways, I want the basics–what am I going to need to breastfeed? What nursing pillows work well? What about slings? I plot on being paid a medela pump as well for when I go back to work…any other small tips or goodies I should get to make this new experience worthwhile?

Why does my cat do this?

10 Jul

My year ancient cat will often stare at me where ever I am in the room, and if I look over at him and call his name, he’ll kind of twist himself around and start rubbing his head and face on his perch or where ever he’s sitting. He’ll usually meow and start purring and he’ll stretch one of his paws out in my direction when he does it. Is this his way of showing affection? I’ve never seen a cat do this previous to and it really cracks my friends up when they see it. He was a rescue cat and was weaned too early, so he also tries to nurse on pillow cases, shirts, or blankets whenever someone has been holding and petting him for awhile. Will he outgrow this eventually or is it something he will always do? It’s cute, but it’s not fun to lay down at night and find out that the corner of my pillow is all soggy where he’s been “nursing” on it.

my son sweats alot..he is 4 months and his temp. is normal…?

08 Jul

why would he be sweaty all the time.. especially when i feed him.. i place him on a boppy pillow while nursing, and by the time he is finished or ready to switch sides i have to flip the pillow over becasue it is waterlogged..is this normal? It only 72 – 73 in our house. we only just run the heat because we live in Arizona, so its not that necessary in the day time…
